Family Background
  • Raised by a single father, Joseph J. Vara Jr., a career military officer, who served in the Marine Corps during WWII, the Army during the Korean War, ending his career as a Major in the Special Forces during the Vietnam War era.
  • Maternal grandfather, James G. Polk, farmer and educator, served as a Member of Congress from Ohio for more than 25 years.
  • Fraternal grandfather, Joseph J. Vara, an immigrant from Sicily, put himself through Cornell's School of Veterinary Medicine before moving to Florida in 1925.
