Served homeless families and children with Covenant House in New York City from 1985 to 1989. Moved to San Francisco to raise a family and create a family-owned business in 1989. Married to San Francisco native, Maureen Taylor, who co-founded SNP Communications, Inc., an executive communications business, and serves as a visiting professor at the University of San Francisco. Two children; 13-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter attending Mill Valley Middle School and Tamalpias High School. Marin County homeowner since 1992. Family Background Raised by a single father, Joseph J. Vara Jr., a career military officer, who served in the Marine Corps during WWII, the Army during the Korean War, ending his career as a Major in the Special Forces during the Vietnam War era. Maternal grandfather, James G. Polk, farmer and educator, served as a Member of Congress from Ohio for more than 25 years. Fraternal grandfather, Joseph J. Vara, an immigrant from Sicily, put himself through Cornell's School of Veterinary Medicine before moving to Florida in 1925.
